Joyce Magic Seals Donaghy Cup for GMIT

GMIT 4-04 Cavan College 1-08

GMIT claimed the Donaghy Cup after a thrilling decider against Cavan college at a very wet Dundalk. Hero for the Westerners was Gillian Joyce who had to retire injured towards the end of the opening period before returning with a nasty thumb injury to perform the goods for the eventual winners.

Despite the bad conditions this was game played at a hectic pace throughout between too very evenly matched sides eager to come out victorious. Cavan opened the scoring through Philomena Sheridan but by the 17th minutes the eventual winners looked in control after goals from Eibhlin Flynn and Gillian Joyce helped them into a six point lead. However back came the Cavan girls with a major from Siobhan Duffy and at the break only a single point separated the sides with GMIT out in front.

Jamie Molloy extended the lead with a point prior to a brace from Claire Griffin drawing the sides level. The sides remained locked at 1-07 to 2-04 until Joyce created another piece of magic to open the Cavan defence and fire to the net. Griffin responded with a point but as hard as they tried Cavan could not get back into the game and the final say went to Jess Greene with GMIT's forth major of the afternoon.

Scorers:
GMIT: Gillian Joyce 2-01, Jess Greene 1-01, Eibhlin Flynn 1-00, Martina conroy & Jamie Molloy 0-01 each
Cavan college: Siobhan Duffy 1-01, Claire Griffin 0-03, Fiona Murray 0-02, Philomena Sheridan & Colette McCaul 0-01 each
